Hotel Miguel Ángel | Madrid

The Dullest of Madrid Business Hotels

Will there be an exciting future?

Lopesan Hotel Group, the Canary Islands-based hospitality company, has partnered with investment firm Stoneweg Hospitality to acquire the iconic Hotel Miguel Ángel in Madrid. While the purchase price remains undisclosed, this deal is the largest in Spain’s hotel sector this year. Located on the prestigious Paseo de la Castellana, the property, previously owned by General Mediterranean Holding S.A SPF, marks Lopesan’s debut in Madrid. The hotel, which opened in 1977, joins Lopesan’s portfolio of 22 owned and managed properties across five countries and is set for an extensive renovation to modernize its facilities and introduce a fresh hotel concept.

This announcement immediately brought to mind my own vision for a hotel brand: The VEN. This concept transforms large business hotels (200+ rooms) into vibrant hubs that seamlessly combine work, meeting, and leisure spaces—all in-house. Designed to cater to both professionals and leisure travelers, The VEN eliminates the need for guests to leave the hotel by offering a plethora of facilities that go far beyond the dreary, grey business hotels we’ve seen in the past. Instead, it introduces dynamic open spaces for co-working, mingling, and lounging, with options for enjoying light bites or drinks, all in an environment designed for both productivity and relaxation.

At The VEN, rooms are reimagined as sanctuaries for rest and retreat—not work. Activities like working, meeting, dining, and socializing are relocated to beautifully designed, communal areas downstairs. Gone are room service and minibars, replaced by vibrant lounges and cafés that offer everything a modern traveler needs. The Miguel Ángel’s existing pool and the addition of a top-tier gym would perfectly embody The VEN’s commitment to wellness and balance, providing guests with spaces to unwind after a busy day.

The VEN concept also introduces creative event spaces capable of hosting anything from intimate meetings to large conferences. But one thing you’ll never find here: those uninspired, all-too-common conference chairs that stifle creativity and energy. In their place are thoughtfully designed furnishings that foster collaboration and innovation.

Currently, the Hotel Miguel Ángel is (very) dated, with its semi-classic décor desperately needing a refresh. However, its prime location, spacious layout, and existing amenities make it the perfect candidate for a complete overhaul into a VEN-style destination. Imagine serene, elegant rooms paired with vivid, multifunctional public spaces—bringing life, energy, and style to Madrid’s hospitality scene. The Miguel Ángel doesn’t just need a renovation; it needs a reinvention. And with The VEN approach, it could become a groundbreaking model for modern business and leisure hotels.
