Once in a while, amid the endless stream of hotel openings and predictable renovation announcements, something truly catches my eye. This time, it’s the Mannheimer Hof in Mannheim. Yes, that Mannheimer Hof — a grand old hotel dating back to 1929 — now under the Leonardo Hotels umbrella. I’ll admit, Leonardo isn’t usually a name that gets my imagination going. They’ve made a habit of snapping up properties across Europe, often doing little more than swapping out the sign above the door. But not this time.
With the Mannheimer Hof, they’ve done something different — something bold. What was once a perfectly respectable, if uninspiring, example of traditional German luxury has been beautifully reimagined. Enter Andreas Neudahm, a veteran designer with over two decades of experience shaping hotels for the likes of Accor, Marriott, IHG, and Radisson. He’s not a household name outside Germany, but clearly the big brands know what he can do. And here, he’s outdone himself.
The new look is a gorgeous blend of 1920s glam and modern poise. I love the contemporary classic style, the almost Wes Anderson-like calm in the rooms, and that vibrant blue pop in the restaurant — it all just works.
Speaking of the restaurant: the Twist à la carte serves up Asian fusion with flair, and the Joy Bar mixes up signature cocktails worth lingering over. There’s also The Patio, a serene courtyard, plus a sauna and fitness area for those who like to balance indulgence with wellness. And if you’re up for something truly unexpected? Head downstairs to the “Schatzkistl” — a quirky cabaret and variety theatre tucked into the cellar.
In short, the Mannheimer Hof has gone from predictable to pretty fabulous. I toast to that! 🥂
